About Te Uru

Located in the lush hills of West Auckland, New Zealand, Te Uru is a contemporary art gallery known for its innovative exhibitions and deep connection to the local Māori heritage. Because of my Nga Toi Taketake Fibre and Textiles class from Spring 2025 at the University of Auckland, I had the pleasure to exhibit some of my weaving works with my class in an exhibit with Te Uru.

Group Work : What is a body?

This work, a collection of different ideas of what it means to be or have a body is a cumulative work made from yarn, wool, thin fabric, and wire.

What it means to decay

In our group we had people exploring organs and gore, others exploring birth and the womb, and I focused on death and decay specifically mushrooms. When looking for inspiration about the body I thought of my family's farm in Iowa and how the many animals we had would eventually pass away and when we would bury them fairy circles would appear on the ground. When I was little I was fascinated by fairy circles as they seemed mystical and intriguing to my young mind, but as I grew up I see fairy circles as the end and beginning of life, like some of my closest llamas, cats dogs, hamsters, or goats saying goodbye one last time.

So I crocheted many strings of cricles and used oil pastels to dye sides of the mushrooms in unnatural colors to match wit the work and reference the mystical fairy circles of my childhood.
